CASE DETAILS:
It is not unheard of for Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to face arrest in India.
- A notable case involves the arrest of former Mumbai Police commissioner Sanjay Pandey by the Enforcement Directorate.
- He was apprehended in connection with the alleged illegal phone tapping of NSE employees spanning from 2009 to 2017.
- Another instance is that of Balveer Singh, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) on probation, who, during his initial independent posting since October of the previous year, has been accused of inflicting multiple injuries on several individuals, sparking controversy.
However, it is crucial to emphasize that these incidents are isolated and do not reflect the overall character of the IPS community.
Similarly, a on duty IPS officer Naveen Kumar, IPS has been arrested.
On Wednesday, December 27, Officer Naveen Kumar, a 2008 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), was arrested by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Hyderabad Police.
As per the reports he is accused of forging documents with the intent to unlawfully acquire a residence owned by a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
According to the complainant, retired IAS officer Bhanwar Lal, his house in Begumpet was rented to Orsu Simbasiva Rao, 53, who is the brother-in-law of Officer Naveen Kumar.
Rao and his wife, Orsu Roopa Dimple, 53, were occupants of the residence. Since 2022, an ongoing conflict between the complainant and the tenants had arisen, stemming from the complainant’s legal pursuit to have the couple evicted from the property.
Allegations have surfaced against Naveen Kumar (IPS), that he collaborated with a couple to forge documents pertaining to a specific house, allegedly with the intention of either wrongfully acquiring the property or extorting money from the complainant.
On November 17, Bhanwar Lal filed a complaint, prompting the police to initiate legal proceedings. A case was registered under sections 420, 406, 467, 468, 471, in conjunction with 32 of the Indian Penal Code, against both the couple and the IPS officer.
Following the complaint, Simbasiva Rao and his wife were arrested on December 22 and presented before a court for judicial remand.
Subsequently, on Wednesday, Naveen Kumar was also taken into custody in connection with the ongoing investigation.
BC Welfare Body Criticize Arrest
On the other hand, the BC Welfare Association has issued a statement strongly condemning the arrest of Naveen Kumar, who belongs to the backward community (BC).
The association alleges that there may be an ulterior motive behind the arrest, suggesting that police authorities, in collaboration with retired upper-caste IAS officer Bhanwarlal, have sought to impede Naveen Kumar’s promotion within the force.
The statement went on to allege a conspiracy involving the connivance of the police with Bhanwarlal, a retired upper-caste IAS officer, leading to the arrest of Naveen Kumar.
The BC Welfare Association has issued a warning, stating that if the detained officer is not released promptly, they will initiate an agitation.
