Commuters React with Mixed Feelings
The Hyderabad Metro Rail has introduced a new policy in which users will be charged for utilizing the toilets, following the transfer of maintenance responsibilities to Sulabh International.
A senior official confirmed that a fee of Rs 2 will be imposed for using urinals and Rs 5 for toilets.
The response from commuters has been varied. Many expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the Metro Rail station toilets, describing them as shabby and poorly maintained.
While few expressed hope that the introduction of charges would lead to improved service and cleanliness.
On the other hand, some individuals criticized the decision, arguing that they already pay premium fares for their travel and that the Metro Rail should provide better amenities at no additional cost within the ticket fare.
Metro Rail officials defended their choice to outsource toilet maintenance, asserting that it would result in sanitized toilets and urinals at the stations.
Vijay Reddy a professor at Government Polytechnic College Masabtank, stated, “These facilities should be provided free of charge. I recently traveled to Chennai and found the fare from the stadium to Chennai Central to be reasonably compared to our Metro.”
Naseer, an IT employee, expressed support for the decision, saying, “It is the right decision.
By paying for the facilities, we can expect better services, as most of the metro toilets are not up to the mark.”
