After Rakshabandhan, Krishna Janmashtami 2022 celebration date too is a confusion among the devotees of South And North.
This is primarily because, whenever the date of any fast or festival falls on two days in Hinduism, then confusion arises about its Muhurat, the exact timing of celebrating the festival.
However, Krishna Janmashtami has no time concern. It is because of the Two Sampradayas ( Sects ) that it is listed on two days.
Krishna Janmashtami is also known as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti and Sree Jayanthi etc.
Krishna Janamashtami will be celebrated on 18th and 19th August 2022
Every year, Krishna Janmashtami is listed on two consecutive days.
The first one is for Smarta Sampradaya and the other one is for Vaishanava Sampradaya.
Vaishnava sect date comes later. A single date for Janmashtami means that both sects would honour the festival on the same date.
However we can notice the unanimity in North India on choosing the day to observe Janmashtami because of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, populary known as ISKCON.
Based on the principles of Vaishnava traditions, most followers of the ISKCON are the followers of Vaishnavism.
In North India, Janmashtami is observed on the day chosen by ISKCON.
Devotees who are not followers of Vaishnavism, are not aware of ISKCON traditions as Janmashtami fasting day might not be the same for them.
In simple words, followers who learnt the difference between Smarta and Vaishnava sect do not follow ISKCON dates to observe Janmashtami fasting.
People who fast on Janmashtami, should have the only single meal a day before Janmashtami as per the vedas.
This day, devotees take Sankalpa to observe a day-long fast and to break it on the following day when both Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi are over.
Few break the fast when either Rohini Nakshatra or Ashtami Tithi is over.
Sankalpa is observed after completing morning rituals and the day-long fasting begins with Sankalpa.
Detailed ritualistic Krishna Puja is performed that involves SIXTEEN STEPS during Nishita Kaal that is in the midnight as per Vedic time-keeping.
All sixteen steps are parts of Shodashopachara (षोडशोपचार) Puja Vidhi. Sixteen Steps Of Puja Vidhi
Another popular form of celebration observed in Gujarat and Maharashtra is the practice of Dahi Handi.
You may have watched a glimpse of the ritual in several Hindi movie songs.
Young boys gather in a compound or in an open ground and form human pyramids to break open the earthen pot fixed at a height of 20-30 feet from the ground.
Fasting Rules On Krishna Janmashtami
The following fasting vidhi has been suggested by the Hindu Religious Text DharmaSindhu
- No grains should be eaten during fasting until it is broken on next day after Sunrise.
- All rules followed during Ekadashi fasting must be followed in Janmashtami fasting also.
- Parana which means breaking the fast should be done at proper time.
- Fasting is broken on the next day after Sunrise when Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra are over.
- If Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra do not get over before Sunset then Parana can be done during the daytime when either Ashtami Tithi or Rohini Nakshatra is over.
- When neither Ashtami Tithi nor Rohini Nakshatra is over before Sunset or even Hindu Midnight (also known as Nishita Time) one must wait to get them over before Parana.
- Based on Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra ending time, fasting may continue for two full days.
- Devotees who are not able to follow two days fasting may take Parana on next day after Sunrise.
