Pomeranian Dog
History: Originated either in Russia or the region above the Arctic Circle. First noted in Pomerania, Germany, hence the name. Has double coat, soft fluffy under coat and a straight hard-textured coat, which forms a frill around the neck. He comes practically in all colors with black and white shading. Tail curls over the back, highly feathered. He has been described as a powder puff on four feet.
Character: An alert, sturdy and intelligent dog. He is full of life. He is a great pet and companion. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action.
Description: The Pomeranian is a member of the Spitz family and stands 15 to 18 i.e., 5 to 7 inches at withers. It weighs 1.8 to 2.5 kgs.
Space And Exercise: Pomeranian does not require much exercise. It can be kept in smallest houses and even in flats.
Temperament: Playful, Intelligent, Friendly, Sociable, Active, Extroverted
Hypoallergenic: No (unlikely to cause an allergic reaction)
Other Names: Pom Pom, Toy Dog (because of its small size) Zwergspitz (Dwarf-Spitz).
Common Health Issues:
Luxating patella or floating kneecap in which the kneecap dislocates from its normal location. It’s a common condition in small and miniature breeds in the ages of 4 to 6 months.
Another health issue is tracheal collapse in which incomplete formation of the cartilaginous rings that leads to flattened trachea. It can occur by birth or acquired, and extrathoracic or intrathoracic (inside or outside the thoracic cavity). Tracheal collapse is most commonly found in miniature breeds, including the Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Pug, and Yorkshire Terrier.
Pomeranian can also suffer a genetic disease called as Alopecia X, a skin condition colloquially known as “black skin disease, in which the dog’s skin turn black and lose all or most of its hair.
Feeding: is your individual choice, but asking your veterinarian is the best way to determine frequency of meals to increase his longevity. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.
Attention Required: Weekly bath and daily brushing. Their fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly with a nail clipper or grinder to avoid splitting and cracking. Their ears should be cleaned regularly to avoid a buildup of wax and debris which can result in an infection.
