India’s First Dengue Vaccine QDENGA Approved for People Aged 4–60 Years

In a landmark step towards combating one of India’s most widespread mosquito-borne diseases, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted market authorization to QDENGA, making it the first approved dengue vaccine in India.
The approval was issued on July 20, 2026, offering new hope in the fight against dengue, which affects thousands of people across the country every year.
What is QDENGA?
QDENGA, developed by global pharmaceutical company Takeda, is a live-attenuated tetravalent dengue vaccine designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes:
- DENV-1
- DENV-2
- DENV-3
- DENV-4
The vaccine has been approved for individuals aged 4 to 60 years.
Dosage Schedule
The vaccination consists of:
- Two doses
- 0.5 ml each
- Administered subcutaneously
- Three-month interval between the first and second dose
Strong Clinical Evidence
The approval is based on Takeda’s extensive global clinical development programme, which included:
- 19 Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III clinical studies
- More than 28,000 participants worldwide
- Additional Phase III DEN-302 clinical trial conducted in India
These studies demonstrated the vaccine’s effectiveness and safety across diverse populations.
No Pre-Vaccination Screening Required
One of the significant advantages of QDENGA is that it does not require pre-vaccination screening to determine whether a person has previously been infected with dengue.
This distinguishes it from some earlier dengue vaccines that required serostatus-based administration, making QDENGA simpler to deploy in public vaccination programmes.
Why This Matters
India reports lakhs of dengue cases every year, especially during the monsoon season. The availability of an approved vaccine is expected to strengthen disease prevention efforts and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
However, health experts emphasize that vaccination should complement—not replace—preventive measures such as:
- Eliminating stagnant water
- Using mosquito repellents
- Installing window screens and mosquito nets
- Wearing full-sleeved clothing
- Seeking early medical attention if symptoms develop
