Hyderabad Metro Route Plan Ordered
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy orders Airport metro realignment from Raidurg to Shamshabad Airport
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) to swiftly conduct traffic studies and prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for the revised alignment of the Airport Metro, which will now pass through the Old City and LB Nagar.
Hyderabad Metro Route Plan
This directive, given on Tuesday, signifies a shift in the plans for Hyderabad Metro, as the focus is now on extending existing Metro rail corridors to facilitate the city’s growth in multiple directions and cater to the needs of the majority of the population.
These expansions are not only expected to be economically feasible but also contribute to the development of the Old City.
The Chief Minister’s decision was made during a review meeting on the proposals for Phase-II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail.
During the meeting, HMRL MD NVS Reddy provided a comprehensive presentation. As part of the discussions, it was agreed to temporarily halt the proposed Raidurg to RGIA Metro corridor.

Emphasizing the importance of the expansion, the Chief Minister instructed the HMRL MD to ensure that it covers significant areas of the city and caters to a maximum number of commuters.
Additionally, he urged NVS Reddy to refine the Phase-II proposals in collaboration with the HMDA Commissioner.
Regarding the HMRL’s proposal to widen the road from Darulshifa to Shalibanda junction in the Old City for the Metro Rail stretch, the Chief Minister suggested that the HMRL MD explore the feasibility of expanding the road from Darulshifa junction to Falaknuma junction to 100 ft.
This, he recommended, should be done in consultation with the public representatives of the Old City.
The Chief Minister believes that this initiative will accelerate the development of the Old City, bringing it in line with other parts of the city.
Revanth emphasized that the road widening and Metro Rail planning were executed without adversely affecting any of the 103 identified religious, heritage, and sensitive structures in the Old City. He expressed willingness to personally inspect and involve public representatives if necessary.
The Chief Minister directed the suspension of the BRS government’s Airport Metro plan from Raidurg to Shamshabad Airport (31 km, Rs 6,250 crore), citing the availability of a wide Outer Ring Road (ORR).
Instead, he proposed planning Airport Metro connectivity from MGBS via the Old City and from LB Nagar, bridging the remaining five km gap from Nagole to LB Nagar Metro stations.
Revanth urged the HMRL MD to conduct traffic studies and prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) promptly for the revised Airport Metro alignment via the Old City and from LB Nagar.
He instructed NVS Reddy to explore the feasibility of constructing part of the Metro at the road level in the Laxmiguda-Jalpally-Mamidipally stretch, as there was a 40 ft wide central median without obstructions.
This, he believed, could reduce Metro Rail construction costs.
The Chief Minister also directed HMDA Commissioner M Dana Kishore and CMO principal secretary V Seshadri to identify government land along this stretch for Transit Oriented Development, contributing to the funding of the Airport Metro project and promoting the development of the Old City and its surroundings.
Revanth stressed the need for an integrated approach in preparing these plans and instructed the officials to draft a letter to Union Minister for Urban Development and Housing Hardeep Singh Puri.
He further suggested incorporating Metro Rail in the Musi riverfront East-West corridor from Taramatipet to Narsingi via Nagole and MGBS (40 km).
In addition, the Chief Minister directed all senior officers present to develop a comprehensive Master Plan addressing the growing needs of Hyderabad, planning dispersed growth hubs along the ORR.
He proposed Metro Rail connectivity from the Airport to Kandukur on the Srisailam highway, where a mega township could be created on lands already acquired for the Pharma City.
He also mentioned that Metro Phase-III plans should explore expanding from JBS Metro station to Shamirpet and from Paradise Metro station to Kandlakoya/Medchal.
