Every year, Teachers’ Day is observed in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the greatest teacher and scholar of India.
It is to be noted that this teachers day on 5th September 2022, the state government has selected 49 teachers of Telangana to be awarded.
However, certain doubts are being raised over the picking criteria for the best teacher award at district-levels.
According to the standard procedure of selection, the District Educational Officers (DEO) publish an advertisement in local regional newspapers seeking applications from eligible teachers for the awards, addressing the MEOs.
Following the standard rule of selection, the proposals for the award has to be submitted by the Mandal Educational Officers via complex headmasters to DEOs.
Based on the proposals, the DEOs in return forward the proposed names to the district Collectors for consideration.
Unfortunately, few DEOs are hesitant in giving wide publicity to the information of the awards. They are confused to identify the efficiency and the performance of the teachers on ground level.
DEOs are often misled by few MEOs who recommend names of undeserving and fake candidates, a sr teacher revealed on the condition of anonymity.
THE SCAM
In some cases, few staff members of the Education Department are reportedly approaching the candidates and luring them to help get awards, despite ineligibility, citing their closeness to DEOs.

Our investigation reveal that few are extracting money between Rs 5,000 to 10,000 from each candidate. If the awards can be easily bought, as a result, the deserving teachers are demotivated, another teacher regretted.
Speaking on this situation, Dr Parvathi Satyanarayana, State honorary president of Progressive Recognized Teachers Union-Telangana, expressed that this entire award system needs to be reviewed and the state should frame a special mechanism to filter to ensure that only deserving, honest and sincere teachers, who are committed in their duties are honored.
Then only the true meaning of celebrating the teachers day would be observed.
