Tummidihatti Project
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate discussions with Maharashtra and help expedite the long-pending Tummidihatti Barrage project on the Godavari River.
During his recent visit to New Delhi, the Chief Minister submitted a memorandum highlighting the project’s importance for Telangana’s irrigation infrastructure and water security.
He urged the Centre’s intervention to resolve inter-state issues and accelerate the project’s implementation.
Strategic Importance of the Tummidihatti Project

The Tummidihatti Barrage is considered a key component of Telangana’s long-term water management strategy.
Originally linked to the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project, the barrage aims to utilize Godavari River waters to support agriculture in drought-prone regions.
According to state officials, the project has the potential to expand irrigation coverage across northern Telangana, particularly in Adilabad and surrounding districts.
It is also expected to strengthen drinking water supply and support future industrial growth by improving water availability in the region.
Telangana’s Proposal
According to government sources, Telangana has proposed increasing the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of the barrage from the previously discussed 148 meters to 150 meters.
Officials argue that the revised design would maximize water storage capacity and improve irrigation benefits while resulting in limited additional submergence in Maharashtra.
The state government maintains that the project will help farmers gain reliable access to irrigation water, improve crop productivity, and reduce dependence on unpredictable monsoon rainfall.
Benefits for Agriculture and Rural Development
Agriculture remains a vital pillar of Telangana’s economy, making robust irrigation infrastructure essential for sustaining rural livelihoods.
Experts believe that projects such as the Tummidihatti Barrage can significantly boost agricultural productivity by ensuring a reliable year-round water supply.
Enhanced irrigation facilities would allow farmers to cultivate larger areas, adopt diversified cropping patterns, and improve farm incomes.
The project is also expected to strengthen rural economies, generate economic opportunities, and contribute to balanced regional development.
Beyond agriculture, the proposed barrage could play an important role in improving drinking water availability and supporting future industrial growth and infrastructure expansion across the region, helping meet Telangana’s long-term water and development needs.
Political and Development Significance
The Tummidihatti Barrage project has emerged as a key development priority for the Telangana government.
By raising the issue directly with PM Modi, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy underscored its importance to the state’s long-term goals and observers believe that the initiative is widely viewed as a strategic investment in the state’s future, with the potential to enhance both rural prosperity and overall economic development.
The Road Ahead
The future of the Tummidihatti Barrage project will largely depend on coordinated discussions between Telangana, Maharashtra, and the Central government.
The project’s next phase is expected to involve detailed technical studies, environmental clearances, and interstate negotiations before implementation can move forward.
If approved and successfully implemented, the Tummidihatti Barrage has the potential to become one of Telangana’s most transformative irrigation initiatives, delivering long-term benefits through accelerated regional development.
