Battle Against Apple’s Transaction Fees: Spotify Strikes a Chord Against Apple’s App Store Fees
The music streaming giant, “Spotify” has launched a robust critique against Apple’s new transaction fees, which can go up to 27%, implemented in the United States.
Spotify amplifies its discontent against Apple’s steep app store fees, branding them ‘outrageous.’
In a call to action, Spotify urges the UK government to intervene, advocating for fair competition in the tech industry. The clash intensifies as the music streaming giant challenges Apple’s dominance.
Apple recently announced that it would permit app developers to sell products outside its stores but insisted on receiving a commission for such transactions.
In response, Spotify labeled Apple’s move as “outrageous” and accused the tech giant of going to great lengths to safeguard its revenues. The music streaming platform is now urging the British government to prevent the imposition of similar charges in the UK.
The fees introduced by Apple in the US are a result of an ongoing legal battle with Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite.
A court ruled that Apple violated US competition laws by restricting app developers from informing users about alternative payment methods.
Apple responded by introducing new rules in the US, allowing users to subscribe to services without using its system but charging developers a commission of up to 27%.
Expressing strong discontent, Spotify stated that Apple’s policy contradicts the US court’s attempt to promote greater competition.
Spotify accused Apple of prioritizing its app store monopoly over the interests of developers and consumers.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has criticized Apple’s fee structure. In October 2023, Spotify accused Apple of exerting an “insane” level of control over the internet.
Now, Spotify is calling on the UK government to take action.
In a statement, it emphasized the need for the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumer Bill to prevent Apple from implementing similar charges.
Spotify believes that such intervention will contribute to fostering a more competitive and innovative tech industry for both UK consumers and businesses.
Additionally, the BBC has sought comments from the UK government regarding Spotify’s appeal.
