Modi’s Mission
5 female cheetahs and 3 male cheetahs will be transported. The Indian government to re-establish the species in its historical ranges in the 1970s, signed a treaty with Namibia.
The agreement included a cheetah reintroduction effort. 5 female and 3 male cheetahs will be transported to India on a customized Boeing 747-400 aeroplane from Namibia’s capital Windhoek on September 16 as part of the first-of-its-kind transcontinental voyage.
Journey Of Cheetahs – How will the Cheetahs be kept aloft?
As per the report, the radio-collared animals would be held in cages measuring 114 cm X 118 cm X 84 cm. They will be fed for two to three days prior to the travel, and three vets from Namibia, South Africa, and India will accompany them.
The flight will journey overnight and arrive in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on September 17 morning.
The Three male cheetahs are aged 4.5 to 5.5 years, and the Five female cheetahs are aged 2 to 5 years, as per the information provided by the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), a NGO based in Namibia.
How were the male cheetahs discovered?
- Two brother male cheetahs were living in the 58,000-hectare private CCF Reserve near Otjiwarongo, Namibia, since July 2021. The CCF field workers first saw their tracks as they walked about the Center.
- In 2018, another male cub was born at Erindi Private Game Reserve. The first female cheetah was discovered in a waterhole at Gobabis in southwestern Namibia.
How did the female cheetahs become known?
- Since September 2020, the CCF facility has become home to the first female cheetah. Another female cheetah was seized in a trap cage on the CCF’s adjoining property in July 2022.
- CCF employees discovered the 4th female cheetah on a farm in Gobabis, Namibia, in late 2017.
The 5th female cheetah was captured in northern Namibia.
Another female was picked up by CCF workers in Feb 2019 from northwestern Namibia near Kamanjab village, and she has made closest friends with the 4th female cheetah since arriving at the CCF centre. The two like being together in their enclosure.
Plans for the future
- The Indian government intends to reintroduce 50 cheetahs.
- The PM is set to release the cheetahs into smaller quarantine cells at Kuno National Park, where they will be housed for a month.
- Later, they will be released into a 6 Sq km predator-resistant complex with 9 compartments.
- According to estimates, the GOI intends to reintroduce 50 cheetahs over the next 5 years.
