The Union Home Ministry has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal (IPS: 1994: WB) and Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner (DCP-Central) Indira Mukherjee (IPS: 2023: WB).
They are accused of defaming the office of the West Bengal Governor by spreading false information. This action follows a report submitted by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, alleging misconduct by Goyal and Mukherjee, which he deemed unbecoming of police officers.
An official from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed initiating disciplinary measures, based on Governor Bose’s detailed report.
The report also implicated other police officers stationed at the Raj Bhawan for fostering and supporting fabricated allegations made by a female employee in April-May 2024.
“These IPS officers have not only tarnished the office of the Governor but have also acted in a manner that violates the Conduct Rules,” the official stated.
He also criticized the Kolkata police’s lack of response to Bose’s June 13 directive to withdraw the police contingent from Raj Bhawan, interpreting it as defiance.
The official highlighted that since mid-June, the Kolkata police had independently established a security mechanism at Raj Bhawan without the Governor’s knowledge or consent, effectively placing the entire establishment under surveillance.
Additionally, the report noted that Goyal and Mukherjee swiftly formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and conducted continuous media briefings to suggest that the Governor could face criminal charges falsely.
When asked for comments, Goyal stated that he was unaware of the Union Home Ministry’s actions against him.
