World Tourism Day 2022 – This year’s topic, ‘Rethinking Tourism,’ with a goal of increasing awareness of tourism’s significance in the global community, re-imagining the sector’s expansion, both in terms of size and importance, Indonesia is conducting World Tourism Day on Sept 27, 2022 at Bali.
It is to be noted that the International Union of Official Tourism Organizations (IUOTO) conducted a special conference in Mexico City on Sept 27, 1970, and adopted the World Tourism Organization’s Statutes.
“Rethinking Tourism” aims to inspire the debate around rethinking tourism for development, including through education and jobs, and tourism’s impact on the planet and opportunities to grow more sustainably.
It also aims to mobilize political will and cooperation to ensure tourism is a central part of policy making.
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili says: “The potential of tourism is enormous, and we have a shared responsibility to make sure it is fully realized”.
The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) was established five years after the adoption of the Statutes of the Organization in 1970, paving the way for UNWTO’s founding.

World Tourism Day: History
The UNWTO then resolved to institute World Tourism Day at the end of September 1979. However, It was originally celebrated on Sept 27, 1980.
