India’s First Green Ammonia Project Launched in Andhra Pradesh: A Major Leap in Clean Energy Exports
India is poised to enter the global clean energy export market with the launch of its first Green Ammonia Project at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

Backed by a massive $10 billion investment, this landmark initiative represents a decisive step in India’s energy transition and strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s position as a strategic hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia production.
Project Launch at Kakinada
The construction of India’s first green ammonia project will commence in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The first major equipment installation ceremony of AM Green’s Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Complex will be inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The project is being developed through the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea complex, making it one of the largest clean-energy investments in the country.
Scale, Investment & Employment Impact
With a total investment of $10 billion, the AM Green project aims to produce 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia, making it the largest green ammonia facility globally.
- Construction phase employment: Up to 8,000 jobs
- Long-term employment: High-skill jobs in renewable energy, logistics, storage, and port operations
This project significantly strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s industrial ecosystem while advancing India’s clean-energy ambitions.
Phased Commissioning & Integrated Infrastructure
The project will be commissioned in phases:
- 0.5 MTPA by 2027
- 1.0 MTPA by 2028
- 1.5 MTPA by 2030
The integrated infrastructure includes:
- 7.5 GW of solar and wind energy
- 1,950 MW electrolyser capacity
- 2 GW round-the-clock renewable power
- Pumped hydro energy storage, including India’s first pumped hydro project at Pinnapuram
Important Facts for Competitive Exams
- Kakinada hosts India’s first green ammonia project
- Total planned capacity: 1.5 MTPA
- Investment size: $10 billion
- Integrates solar, wind, electrolysers, and pumped hydro storage
- Green ammonia acts as a key carrier for green hydrogen
Global Exports & Strategic Importance
AM Green has secured long-term supply agreements with global energy companies such as Uniper and is actively engaging with partners in Japan and Singapore.
Green ammonia produced at Kakinada will be exported for use in clean shipping fuels, power generation, and hydrogen energy pathways, firmly positioning India as an emerging global clean-energy exporter.
