WHAT IS BULLYING?
Bullying means badmashi in hindi – bullying can happen to anyone irrespective of age. Since HNT’s edu wing deals with children we will be discussing bullying that takes place in schools and in their home or surroundings.
Bullying – Repeated aggressive behaviour of one child or group of children on a weak student who is repeatedly get abused and get hurts mostly physically or emotionally.
Many youngsters can be unkind to each other during interactions while studying together.
Growing and trying to create social impact while pulling down others. While these interactions are unpleasant, Bullying almost always takes an emotional toll upon the child being bullied, but the actions that constitute bullying vary.
THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF BULLYING
PHYSICAL BULLYING
HITTING, KICKING, SLAPPING AND PINCHING, SPITTING, TRIPPING, PUSHING
STEALING OR DESTROYING SOMEONE’S POSSESSIONS, MAKING MEAN OR RUDE GESTURES
VERBAL BULLYING
NAME CALLING, INSULTS, TEASING, INTIMIDATION, HOMOPHOBIC OR RACIST REMARKS, INAPPROPRIATE SEXUAL COMMENTS, TAUNTING, THREATENING TO CAUSE HARM
SOCIAL BULLYING
LYING AND SPREADING RUMORS, LEAVING SOMEONE OUT ON PURPOSE, TELLING OTHERS NOT TO BE FRIENDS WITH SOMEONE, EMBARRASSING SOMEONE IN PUBLIC, DAMAGING SOMEONE’S SOCIAL REPUTATION OR RELATIONSHIPS
CYBER-BULLYING
POSTING/SENDING HURTFUL TEXTS EMAILS OR POSTS, IMAGES OR VIDEOS, MAKING ONLINE THREATS, IMITATING OTHERS ONLINE OR USING THEIR LOG-IN, DELIBERATELY EXCLUDING OTHERS ONLINE, SPREADING NASTY GOSSIP OR RUMORS
These days Cyber-bullying has increased among children as digital media has become more prevalent in the social culture of children and teens.
Who Is At Risk?
All young people are in danger of being bullied at some point during their studies or at adolescence. In majority of the cases the youth with disabilities, and socially isolated youth — may be more likely to be bullied.
What Are The Results?
The effects of bullying involve both the bully and the victim. Youth who are bullied are more likely to suffer from the following:
- Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and thoughts of suicide
- Health issues like headaches, sleep problems, abdominal pain, bed-wetting, and fatigue
- Academic issues including poor attendance, low test scores, and increased dropout rates
Youth Who Bully:
- Are at greater risk of smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol
- Perform poorly in school and have a poor perception of school environment
- Are more likely to become involved in criminal activity and to experience psychiatric disorders*
Why Do Children Bully?
Children bully for different reasons. Those who bully persistently are likely to do so out of anger or frustration.
They may struggle for attention and love at home or may be struggle socially and could have also been victims of bullying.
in order to satiate their insecurity they try to dominate fellow students and feel better.
They may have high self esteem, show little regret for their bullying behaviour and not see bullying as morally wrong.
How Bullying Can Affect Children:
- Feel guilty like it is their fault for everything
- Feel hopeless and stuck with no solution
- Feel alone
- Feel not being loved
- Become Irritating
- Low Self Confidence
- Feeling like you don’t fit in with the cool group
- Feel depressed and rejected by friends
- Feel unsafe and afraid
- Feel confused and stressed out
- Crying thinking why this is happening to me
- Feel ashamed that this is happening to me
How Bullying Can Affect Other Children?
Bullying can have a negative impact on other child who see other kids being bullied.
It is not just a problem for victims and bullies. If your child witness others been bullied even your child may feel angry, fearful, guilty, and sad.
Your child may feel as bad as those who are being bullied. Your kid may also worry being bullied in future.
When bullying isn’t stopped or challenged by anyone it can create an environment where bullying is accepted and where everyone feels powerless to stop it.
How Bullying Can Affect Other People?
Bullying can have a negative impact on everyone – it is not just a problem for victims and bullies. If you see or know of others been bullied you may feel angry, fearful, guilty, and sad.
You may feel as bad as those who are being bullied.
You may also feel worried that the bullying could happen to you.
When bullying isn’t stopped or challenged by anyone it can create an environment where bullying is accepted and where everyone feels powerless to stop it.
Know Your Rights
You have a right to feel safe and to be treated fairly and respectfully. Bullying is a serious problem with serious mental and physical impacts. Bullying can violate many of your human rights including:
- your right to be free from mental, emotional and physical violence
- your right to education
- your right to a safe work environment
Eventually,
- Teach students and adults to recognize verbal, social, physical, and cyber bullying and report it to elders.
- Encourage an environment of safety, kindness, and respect in your classroom or workplace.
