Warangal, Peddapalli New Airports For Telangana
Two outdated airfields are slated to be developed by the union government under the new UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, making a decades-long dream of air connection to combined Warangal and Karimnagar districts a reality.
The airports are located on the fringes of Warangal and in the Peddapalli district, respectively.

As mandated by the Airports Authority of India, the state government has submitted a Techno Economic Feasibility report in this regard.
The state had proposed building three Greenfield Airports in Nizamabad, Palvoncha (Bhadradri-Kothagudem), and Mahbubnagar, as well as three Brownfield Airports in Mamnoor (Warangal), Basanth Nagar (Peddapalli), and Adilabad.
In addition, the union government launched Vayudoot air services from Mamnoor airfield from 1970 to 1977, and from Basant Nagar airport from 1975 to 1982.
As a result of the exorbitant expenditures, the government discontinued these programmes. There are currently plans in the works to reintroduce services from these two airports.
KTR and State Planning Commission Board deputy chairman B. Vinod Kumar laid the groundwork for this when they met with civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi. In the meeting they proposed for setting up six mini airports in Telangana.
Following request, Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials visited the airfields at Mamnoor and Basant Nagar.
Puri requested that they submit Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), as well as information about rising flood levels at Mamnoor and Basant Nagar airports.
It is to be noted that Mamnoor currently has 750 acres accessible as opposed to 1,140 acres. The government has purchased some government land in the adjacent villages of Nakkalapally and Gadepally.
Basant Nagar airport currently occupies 40 acres of land and will require an additional 700 acres.
Revenue officials have already done a survey and identified lands on survey numbers 363, 301, and 413 between the village panchayats of Palakurthi, Kurmapally, Basant Nagar, and Reginedu, and have submitted their reports to the state government.

In addition to air connectivity, the two airports will boost travel and tourism in locations like
- Ramappa and Thousand Pillars temples,
- Warangal fort,
- Ramgiri Killa,
- Kaleshwaram,
- Bhadrakali,
- Dharmapuri,
- Kondagattu, and
- Vemulawada temples.

With upcoming mini airports, tremendous commercial development is anticipated in portions and in the vicinity of the former Warangal and Karimnagar districts.
Under UDAN 5.0, 29 airstrips were deemed prospective airports. Other sacred places include Baripada and Konark in Odisha, Hassan and Kolar in Karnataka, and Chinyalisaur in Uttarakhand.
On October 21, 2016, UDAN was launched with the goal of providing air connectivity in Tier II and Tier III cities.
It is a Centre-led regional airport development programme that is part of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) for improving under served air connections.
The goal of UDAN is to make air travel affordable while improving India’s economic development.
The programme intends to build new airports and improve existing regional airports in order to expand the number of airports serving scheduled civilian flights.
At the start, there were 406 under-served airports and 27 well-served airports out of a total of 486 airports.
