NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) has implemented the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative in a bid to optimize the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system and streamline traffic flow at toll plazas.
This initiative aims to discourage the practice of employing a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or associating multiple FASTags with a particular vehicle.
To enhance user compliance, NHAI is urging FASTag users to promptly complete the ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) process for their latest FASTag, aligning with the guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

FASTags with valid balances but incomplete KYC after January 31, 2024, risk deactivation or blacklisting by banks.
To avoid any inconvenience, users are advised to ensure the completion of KYC for their latest FASTag and adhere to the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ principle.
Previous FASTags should be discarded through the respective banks, as only the latest FASTag account will remain active post January 31, 2024.
Assistance or clarification regarding these procedures can be sought from the nearest toll plazas or the toll-free customer care numbers provided by the issuing banks.
NHAI’s move comes in response to reported instances of multiple FASTags being issued for a single vehicle and the issuance of FASTags without adhering to KYC requirements, violating RBI mandates.
Additionally, improper attachment of FASTags to vehicle windshields has led to unnecessary delays at toll plazas, causing inconvenience to fellow highway users.
With a remarkable penetration rate of approximately 98 percent and boasting over 8 crore users, FASTag has been instrumental in revolutionizing the Electronic Toll Collection system across the country.
The ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative is poised to enhance toll operations’ efficiency, ensuring seamless and comfortable journeys for users on national highways.
