Secretary-level reshuffle Likely Before Elections
As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections loom, there’s buzz about a substantial shakeup in the top echelons of the New Delhi government.
It looks as if this Secretary-level reshuffle holds significance as it reflects the understanding between the current government and the Election Commission regarding the timing of the upcoming elections.
The reshuffle is expected to primarily address the filling of Secretary-level positions by the end of February, providing opportunities for officers who entered service in 1992.
Currently, four Secretary-level positions are vacant, with a fifth one becoming available at the end of this month.
These roles encompass responsibilities in Border Management, Health & Family Welfare, Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Defence Production, and the Ministry of Cooperation.
Of particular importance is the Secretary position in the Ministry of Cooperation, as the incoming official will collaborate closely with Amit Shah and navigate the challenges of this recently established ministry.
Many are still grasping the significance of this ministry under the current government.
Insiders suggest that the Defence Production role may operate with a temporary arrangement due to its unpredictable nature.
Furthermore, two additional Secretary-level vacancies are anticipated in the coming weeks as officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment and Ministry of Women and Child Development retire.
Several factors, including the empanelment of 1993 batch IAS officers, vacancies in key positions like NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) and IWAI (Inland Waterways Authority of India) and the need to delay filling some positions until May for a seamless transition of power, will shape the framework of this reshuffle.
