This development comes just after Munawar Faruqui, another comedian who has drawn condemnation from right-wing organizations, was forced to cancel his concerts in Delhi after getting similar threats and being denied permission.
According to media sources, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal urged the authorities to cancel two performances of Kunal Kamra because his jokes reportedly “insulted Hindu gods” read the content in a letter which addressed to the Deputy Commissioner.
In the meantime, Kunal Kamra also addressed the situation on Twitter with a satirical message about the cancellation of his performances and the threats he had gotten from right-wing organisations like Bajrang Dal and VHP.
The comedian claimed in the tweet that “He makes fun of our culture, He makes fun of our deities, We have no evidence but his show disturbs our tranquilly, 12 of us don’t want the play to happen & 500 have got tickets to watch it, So what should the authorities do?” (UPSC question 10 marks)
Right-wing organisations frequently criticise Kunal Kamra since he is recognised for cracking jokes on national political and social issues. Last year, the comedian’s shows were canceled in Bengaluru and Gurgaon as well.
Kamra has always been in the midst of controversies since he has been openly criticizing several policies and actions of PM Narendra Modi.
Earlier, indefinite bans levied against him on flying with four airlines, Indigo, Spicejet, Air India & GoAir which came after he uploaded a viral video where he heckled TV anchor Arnab Goswami in an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Lucknow.
