Cultural Symbolism Blossoms: Namoh108 Lotus Variety Unveiled with Unique Qualities
In a recent event at National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) Lucknow, a new lotus variety called Namoh108 was dedicated to the nation. Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the significance of the lotus flower and the number 108 in Indian culture, giving this variety of lotus an important identity.
Compared to other lotus varieties, Namoh108 is known for its resilience to weather conditions.
It has the ability to flower from March to December, making it the longest-flowering variety available. This is a significant improvement as other varieties typically flower for only 4-5 months.
In addition to the lotus variety, CSIR-NBRI also released apparel made from lotus fiber and a perfume called ‘Frotus’ that is developed from Lotus plants in collaboration with FFDC, Kannauj.
The institute’s director, AK Shasany, explained that the fiber was extracted from the lotus stem to create clothes. Weavers from the Barabanki district crafted a Manipuri-style coat using these fibers.
The Namoh108 lotus variety, as well as the products made from it, have the potential to benefit farmers, horticulture farms, and small merchants in the flower business. These developments contribute to the economic development of villages and provide new opportunities in this sector.
